Originally demarcated on the 18th of September 1908, the Demarcated Region of Vinhos Verdes extends throughout the northwest of Portugal, in the area traditionally known as Entre-Douro-e-Minho.
Its Northern limits are the Minho River, which establishes part of the border with Spain, to the South the Douro River and the Freita, Arada and Montemuro mountains, to the East the Peneda, Gerês, Cabreira and Marão mountains and to the West the Atlantic Ocean.
In terms of geographical area, it is the biggest Portuguese Demarcated Region, and one of the biggest in Europe.
The natural conditions of this region are ideal for the production of excellent white wines.
Orographically, the region presents itself as “a vast amphitheater that gradually rises from the seashore towards the interior” (Amorim Girão), exposing the entire area to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, a phenomenon reinforced by the orientation of the valleys of the main rivers, which run from east to west and facilitate the penetration of sea winds.
This Atlantic influence, the soils mostly of granite origin, the mild climate and high rainfall, translate into the freshness, lightness and elegance of the wines of this region.
Sub-region of Amarante and Marco de Canaveses
Located in the interior of the Region, the sub-region of Amarante and Marco de Canaveses is protected from the influence of the Atlantic and at a high average altitude, so the thermal amplitude is higher than the average of the Region and the summer is hotter.
These conditions favour the development of some later maturation grape varieties: Azal and Avesso (white), Amaral and Espadeiro (red). The soil is granitic, as in most of the Region. White wines usually have fruity aromas and a higher alcohol content than the average of the Region.
These are obtained from the Arinto, Loureiro and Trajadura grape varieties, adapted to temperate climates and, therefore, common to almost all of the Vinhos Verdes Region, but here with an ally, Avesso, a grape variety more characteristic of the interior sub-regions.
As the young and fresh Vinhos Verdes are joined by more wines of intense and structured character, of all colors, the offer of wines from the Region increases, with a palette of flavors ranging from elegant to complex.
From different single varietal Vinhos Verdes, like Alvarinho or Avesso, to Vinhos Verdes from different plots or terroirs, new or old vines, with barrel aging or from old vintages, the Vinhos Verdes easily accompany an entire menu.
