Originalmente demarcada em 18 de Setembro de 1908, a Regi\u00e3o Demarcada dos Vinhos Verdes estende-se por todo o noroeste de Portugal, na zona tradicionalmente conhecida como Entre-Douro-e-Minho.<\/p>

Os seus limites s\u00e3o a Norte o Rio Minho, que estabelece parte da fronteira com Espanha, a Sul o Rio Douro e as serras da Freita, Arada e Montemuro, a Este as serras da Peneda, Ger\u00eas, Cabreira e Mar\u00e3o e a Oeste o Oceano Atl\u00e2ntico.<\/p>

Situada no interior da regi\u00e3o, a sub-regi\u00e3o de Amarante tem um solo maioritariamente gran\u00edtico, est\u00e1 protegida da influ\u00eancia atl\u00e2ntica e a uma altitude m\u00e9dia elevada, pelo que as amplitudes t\u00e9rmicas s\u00e3o superiores \u00e0 m\u00e9dia da regi\u00e3o e o Ver\u00e3o \u00e9 mais quente. Estas condi\u00e7\u00f5es favorecem o desenvolvimento de algumas castas de matura\u00e7\u00e3o mais tardia: Azal e Avesso (brancas), Amaral e Espadeiro (tintas).
